I didn’t get into biking really hard until college since it was really the best way to get around campus and even around the town. My freshman year, Kevin, my brother-in-law, bought me a kick-ass Target Mongoose full sussy mountain bike for around a hundred bucks and it got me around Western Illinois’s campus for over four years (yep…over four). It was my first decent multi-speed, the first bike I rode wasted, it was also the first bike I took out on a technical single-track at Spring Lake near Macomb and the first bike that I wiped badly enough on to warrant a my first helmet purchase – my sister, Kevin’s wife, Klaudia, is the one to thank for the Bell I currently wear.

So started my love affair with mountain biking and though I have stepped up to a fancy new Trek 6000 trail bike which runs and handles like a dream, I still have the Mongoose and it’s time to bring it back from neglect and non-use as a kick ass full suspension bike from hell…on a budget. This is a project I’ve been considering doing since I first started doing my own work on my and my friends’ bikes and It’s something I’m going to have a hell of a time doing.
